Religious Instruction in Schools: With the passing of Bill 95 on June 15, 2005, the Quebec Government announced major changes in the curriculum for religious instruction in the school. The option to choose either moral instruction or religious and moral instruction (Catholic or Protestant) will be replaced by a new program of ethics and religious culture. This single program will be obligatory for all students, whether at the primary or secondary level. This change will take place beginning in September 2008, by which time the Ministry of Education in Quebec would have completed the development and adaptation of the new program.
These new guidelines for religious instruction in Quebec have prompted Churches to rethink their approach to Christian education of youth. The orientation of the CEC is clear: it is now the responsibility of families and Christian communities to ensure that appropriate means are in place for their youth and adult members to provide them with a formation (training) for a Christian life which will reflect the Quebec context. |
